South Ossetia Isn’t Kosova

Hitchens lists some of the reasons why here.

Russia continues it’s tradition of leaving interesting things behind after military ‘withdrawls’: No — not only scorched earth — now it’s short range ballistic missile launchers* (SS-21 missile launchers to be exact) except on purpose.

Of course South Ossetia isn’t Kosovo, and it’s painfully clear Russia is taking the piss. Still, if the people of South Ossetia don’t want it to be part of Georgia, there’s no reason it should be. Bollocks to this “integrity of international borders” shite - self-determination is what matters.

Agree with the principle of support for Ossetian (and Abkhazi) autonomy, to the extent it enjoys the support of the majority of the people of Abkhazia and Ossetia. That part’s easy. But no so fast with: “Bollocks to this ‘integrity of international borders’ shite,” because if it’s all-out “self-determination” the people of Ossetia and Abkhazia really want, they won’t get it without internatonal recognition (and enforcement) of the integrity of their borders, shite or no.
