Davis: it was a stunt
by hakmao, 12 July 2008
Former Shadow Home Secretary David Davis, fresh from his stunning by-election victory in Haltemprice and Howden (elected by 24% of eligible voters), has signalled his intention to fight ‘Dave’ Cameron for the soul of the Nasty Party on a range of right-wing issues, confirmation that his campaign was never about ‘civil liberties’ or the rights of threatened minorities — as if anyone who supports racist laws* (and favours strengthening them), and banging up migrants in holes like Yarls Wood is in a position to lecture anyone else about liberty in the first place. As we said on this matter weeks ago, the by-election was a stunt to position himself either for a Tory leadership challenge, or as ‘kingmaker’. Liberty for white middle class men is not liberty at all.
* Popquiz: what is the correct adjective for someone who supports racist laws?
