There is nothing on earth which could induce me to subject myself to one hundred and twenty nine minutes of that appalling, repetitive, fatiguing trash.

    The pricks are catching up:

“Matthew Fox is splendid as Racer X; it would be hard to screw that up. For Fox, it is his first big screen role that is almost equal to his presence on Lost, but it is Roger Allam as Royalton who walks away with the film (if anyone truly does walk away with it). As Royalton, he looks like a dead ringer for journalist Christopher Hitchens mixed with Emperor Palpatine’s demeanor. Allam (V For Vendetta, The Queen and RKO 281) looks so much like Hitchens that it seems deliberate. Is this the Wachowskis taking him to task for betraying his leftist ideals by supporting the Iraq War? How did Hitchens end up supporting an administration he would have gone after in another time? Was Royalton a good man at one time who allowed greed to get the best of him by betraying his ideals as well? I know Speed Racer is a family film aimed at ten year old boys, but the resemblance is too uncanny. As far as political and social commentary goes, V For Vendetta which the Wachowskis adapted from Alan Moore’s graphic novel accomplished those goals very well. No one is expecting any kind of commentary from Speed Racer, but this bit of casting I find very amusing and intriguing. One must remember that parents take their children to the movies. Was this bit of casting done for grown-ups?”

    Also just catching up here:

After he breaks his brother’s record, Speed is approached by a nefarious racing tycoon, Royalton (Roger Allam), a look- and sound-alike for Slate’s own Christopher Hitchens (who, come to think of it, would make a great movie villain). Royalton wants Speed to dump the family business and come drive for his faceless corporation. When Speed politely declines, Royalton torments him (and us) with 10 minutes of exposition on the history of the World Racing League, now a corrupt federation capable of ensuring Speed never wins a race again.
