Now, if Sauce scum were to actually read a proper book (or more likely a web page that wasn’t a blog) and found that quote they could claim they were expressing the same idea (sort of — in a fucked up way).

So what makes Joyce’s thought worth engaging with but Sauce filth just additional evidence of their irredeemable pomo frivolity?

Obvious answer is that Joyce may not have been a prole but had a pretty good idea about what real poverty and bigotry and hatred meant - and in any case his (or rather Bloom’s) words were directed specifically against The Citizen and his Fenian ultra-nationalism rather than against all radicals and enthusiasts everywhere.

For Saucers I know it’s all really about their own anger and resentment against everything that confronts them with their inability to care deeply about anything or anyone outside of their own petty little dog walking, newspaper reading and blog-commenting existence.

I was also reminded of the verses from the book of Revelations that Dostoyevsky uses to damn Stepan Verkhovensky at the end of The Possessed:
