“Would we have allowed Nazi Germany to host the Olympics?”

by Jura Watchmaker, 22 April 2008

This one’s been round the houses, but better late than never, eh? It speaks volumes about something or other; you tell me what.

The photo was taken at a pro-Tibet/anti-PRC rally in the US.

Well, I’m not surprised that it’s a rally in the US. Speaks wonders on how ignorant people can be.

    Berlin, 1936.

  2. Terry Collmann

Who’ll be 2008’s Jesse Owens, though?

    Could it not mean

‘Would (today’s society) allow the Olympics to take place in Nazi Germany?’

rather than ‘Thank god the Olympics were never staged in Nazi Germany, eh?’

The ‘we’ in this case is unclear, but I read the first meaning rather than the second. This makes it straight moral equivalence rather than ignorance, but it’s an order of magnitude more sophisticated than BUSH = HITLERZZZ!!1111!!!!

Ho ho, Yanks are so dumb. We know better.

Yanks are dumb. What is the problem with that statement? To paraphrase Aristotle - we make sense of our world by generalising…

    1) The Olympic Games WERE staged in Nazi Germany in 1936.

    2) Today’s society would still allow a totalitarian system to host the Olympic Games. Peking is the best piece of evidence for that.
The issue about Tibet has been known since 1950 the beginning of Chinese occupation. It is totally naive to believe that staging the Olympic Games in Peking in 2008 would not have triggered Tibetian protests or would have solved the problems that were created in the 50s.

    Concerning Nazi Germany:
Well, of course, nobody would have voted for Germany hosting the Olympic Games in 1936, if the committee had known what Germany would be like in 1936.
As the decision for Berlin was made on May 13th 1931 (!), no one was able to predict that Germany would be a totalitarian system in the year 1936.
And despite several protests and doubts (also by the USA), the Olympic Games did take place in Berlin in 1936.

Running around with a statement as shown in the picture shows that this person obviously doesn’t know anything about history.
