Confident

by hakmao, 30 March 2008

Via Bloomberg:

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has lost elections, the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party said, citing early results posted at polling stations. The official outcome hasn’t been announced.

The party, led by Morgan Tsvangirai, garnered 67 percent of the 30 percent of votes so far counted[.]

However,

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he is confident of winning today’s elections by a landslide majority.

Mugabe has threatened reprisals over the vote:

Mugabe’s camp said any announcement by the MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, that he was the rightful president would be treated as tantamount to a coup and dealt with accordingly.

Update:

Election observers in Zimbabwe have expressed concerns over “delays” in announcing official presidential poll results, amid fears of rigging.

The head of one monitors’ group said he had “no doubt” officials now know most results. None have yet been released.

The election commission said late on Sunday that no results would be announced until 0400GMT on Monday.

Riot police have been patrolling the streets of the capital, Harare, and residents were told to stay indoors.

Pity the counters in Zimbabwe. They are goin have to count and recount and recount to ensure the right result.

As managers like to say why don’t they just get it right first time.

When Zanu spokespeople say that an MDC victory would never be allowed and then Mugabe says that he would never cheat are they not guilty of a certain inconsistency?

Son of Smithy strikes again! All those annoying people won’t vote for you? Just don’t let them vote, then.

The traditional answer has been to appoint a new electorate.

This reminds me of that supreme idiot from Twisty Sticks blog and Comment is Fucking Worthless — the moron of majestic proportions himself - Dsquareddoublestoopid wanking on about how Mugabe’s ’slum clearances’ were actually regeneration projects or some shit like that.

It was pointed out to me that Spiked™ now have a page devoted to calling out ‘China bashing’.

I suppose the Right always spunk up over the idea of a state with ‘no independent trade unions, no independent judiciary, where demonstrations and strikes are prohibited, where there is no freedom of movement or assembly, whose citizens are subject to arbitrary detention and torture and where elections–such as they are–are a sham’ … and not forgetting that really cool work for no pay schtick. That’s really modern–like the ‘cashless society’ y’know.

    Racist MDC opposes Zimbabwean democracy

By suggesting Africans want democracy, opponents of Mugabe are treating Zimbabweans as children and passive objects.

It’s worth going back to Vincent Magombe on this too.

Re the update — mugabe is a cunt

  10. None

There was a Zimbawbean military chief on the news before the election, flatly stating that if Tsvangirai won the army would not recognise him as President. So if ZanuPF can’t manage to steal the election, expect a military coup instead.

Surely Vidal’s central point is entirely sensible; that if you don’t have slum clearances, you have slums and that under whatever name, slum clearance programs have been part of development since the invention of the city. The point here is that there is a worldwide and structural problem which won’t be helped by pretending that the only thing wrong with African cities is that the bogeyman Mugabe is being a bastard because he is evil.
