What a guy

“I’m still thinking of it as this morning’s result. I hope it doesn’t show.” Unfortunately, Mr Christopher, it does (but fuck all that shit anyway).
“Anyone who like me when they think about the Clintons thinks about zombies, thinks about the undead, thinks about stakes through the heart, silver bullets and so on, has just received confirmation. It’s as bad as we thought it was going to be.”

Hitchens’ characterisation of Obama reminded me of the Tom Grunick’s character in the 1987 movie “Broadcast news”. Who wouldn’t have fallen for him? He was so good looking, and charming and gracious..
“Aaron Altman: I know you care about him. I’ve never seen you like this about anyone, so please don’t take it wrong when I tell you that I believe that Tom, while a very nice guy, is the Devil.
Jane Craig: This isn’t friendship.
Aaron Altman: What do you think the Devil is going to look like if he’s around? Nobody is going to be taken in if he has a long, red, pointy tail. No. I’m semi-serious here. He will look attractive and he will be nice and helpful and he will get a job where he influences a great God-fearing nation and he will never do an evil thing… he will just bit by little bit lower standards where they are important. Just coax along flash over substance… Just a tiny bit. And he will talk about all of us really being salesmen. And he’ll get all the great women.

I’m not sure why everyone thinks that, McCain looks like the frontrunner to me. Everyone knows he hates Bush, he’s miles better qualified, he’s not black, he’s not a woman, he’s a war hero.
What am I missing?
In 2000 and 2004 Gore and Kerry had 10-15% leads in the polls around this time.
These are less impressive:

(I thought there was a moratorium on mentioning that election?)
Still, I don’t think ThatNiceBarackObama is Satan - though I would like to know what Bill Hicks would have made of someone the consensus seems to back. At least the British are a lot less believing of charismatic politicians. All UK PM’s have been portrayed as nice but clueless (Jim Hacker) or conniving villains (Francis Urquhart). The closest in fiction to a popular PM is.. well, I suppose Harold Saxon from the last series of Dr Who came from nowhere, was universally popular and spoke of change and new hope didn’t he?
As I said earlier, its very like Blair in 1996, particularly with the celebrities backing him, and it feeling almost indecent to ask him any difficult questions.
But anyway, Zbigniew Brzezinski has decided to back Obama. He gave a very grandiose interview to the Today Programme a while back, saying it was time for less ideology and more realism and adult diplomacy in this new century, and what folly it was to suggest that this whole Islamist thing was going to stick arond for a long time.

I last saw him on the Cold War documentary from 1998, gloating about how he’d helped turn Afghanistan into ‘the Vietnam for the Soviet Union’ as a means of getting his own back for its help of the VietCong.
Well done, Zbig, well *done*, very adult and sober of you.
