Hizb-ut-Tahrir: I er gået forkert!

by Will, 20 February 2008

Remember our Comrade Danish MP Villy Søvndal? The one with the spine?

Well — here he is again, this time giving it some welly to the clerical fascists of Hizb ut-Tahrir and all those who would give ‘religious representatives’ preferential treatment, or put them in ‘a position where they were thought to represent the views of ordinary immigrants.’

Here’s his blog here.

That’s it — I’m emailing him with an invite to blog here. Hope his English is up to scratch. Fuck it — we can always get Dr Sedgey to translate if not.

Sombrero aloft to Flea for the link to the The Copenhagen Post story.

It’s an interesting development, having a party leader speak out like that. Denmark has been through the same agonising public debate about HuT [as the UK], and I’m not altogether sure what the latest consensus or majority view is. But it’s certainly clear that Søvndal doesn’t want the organisation banned. In that respect he’s continuing with a longstanding SF policy.

I do wish Søvndal had not made that comment advising islamists wanting to live in a sharia state to fuck off to the Middle East. It’s hardly fair on the people of the Middle East who don’t want to live in a theocracy. Nothing less than world liberation will do. It’s possible, and we shouldn’t shy from demanding it.

The English translations of Søvndal’s quotes in the Copenhagen Post article are fair, and looking at the original text of Søvndal’s blog I get the impression that he’s playing to a domestic gallery using language designed to possibly win over the more generally anti-Muslim elements of Danish society. Now I’m all for Danish democrats across the spectrum making common cause against the nutters, but that precludes cuddling up to fascist leader Pia Kjærsgaard.

Keep a close eye on Naser Khader in the Danish debate around Islamism. He may have made some bad mistakes with the Radikal Venstre split and the establishment of the Ny Alliance party before the last election, but he continues to be *the* opinion former when it comes to opposition to Islamism in Denmark.

The problem with the Islamisk Trossamfund (Islamic Society) is that it continues to represent many if not most godbothering Muslims in Denmark, and that creates certain difficulties for the government. It is much, much more difficult for the government to snub this body than it is for Villy Søvndal or Naser Khader.

No, I’m not accusing Søvndal of … ahem … islamophobia, but I think he is playing party politics, and we need to keep this in perspective.
