A nice mugging from the Hitch.
On a favorite, rightish site, the given title, “To Hell With the Archbishop of Canterbury”, is replaced with “The Archbishop’s Embrace of Sharia.”
According to his “clarification”, the Archbish of Cant was just trying to start a debate. And he had decided that the result of that debate was to be people agreeing to more religious interference in the process of lawmaking and more legal exemptions for bigots.
Manipulative reactionary authoritarians only seem nicer when they are all smug and cosy and obfuscate the content of their manipulative reactionary authoritarianism with great clouds of psuedo-adademic candyfloss.
Of course, there already is a recognised religion-based law-making authority in the UK, it’s called the General Synod of the Church of England, and part of Beardie’s hidden agenda in supporting Sharia in the UK is bolstering his own little legal enclave and hoping to make it less likely that anyone pushing for equal opportunities for gays, women and so in in the CofE can use parliamentary l;aw to overthrow Synod law.
For a good attack on Beardie’s whole style of argument, see here

Rather foolish, isn’t it? My impression is that the C of E is expiring and Islam is on its way to dominate.
