CIF-like

by Scoop Shachtman, 20 January 2008

I thought CIF was bad, but here’s the Sunday Mirror’s forum:

what are the zionist to a jew?

a terrorist

what are extreme islamists to a muslim?

a terrorist

Note: I consider myself a Zionist, if that is considered to be support for the continued survival of the state of Israel.

Secularists, the new terrorists

by Scoop Shachtman, 20 January 2008

In yesterday’s Times, I came across yet another beleaguered believer.

“Far worse than the threat from international terrorism is the aggressive process of secularisation that has gripped our country, and most of Europe, and which is becoming ever more frenzied. For example, I guess not many people are aware that it is against the law for state schools to teach the Christian faith as true. Teachers are allowed only to teach about religions. This is atheism by decree, for the only perspective from which one can teach about all religions is the secular perspective. So our children are not brought to a sense of holiness and awe, but are merely taught the meanings of religious terms as sociological descriptions. This deprivation of the spiritual is a form of child abuse.”

So Peter Mullen, chaplain to the Stock Exchange (ha!) and rector of St Michael’s Cornhill, seems to believe the following:

  1. The Secular Society are a greater threat than Al Qaeda.
  2. State schools are imposing atheism by decree, and are therefore guilty of child abuse.

His view on secularism is all the more shocking given his fairly robust stance on Rowan Williams’ views on terrorism, which he characterizes as “high-grade sample of the drivel we have heard these past three years from those in the West who despise the civilisation which is their inheritance.”. Mullen’s own critique of Western civilisation is akin to Hizb ut Tahir meets Daily Mail. This is taken from his welcome message to his website.

Devout Muslims look at western society and they are sickened by what they see. They ask what we value and modern, secular, consumerist Britain answers by its deeds even more than its words:

“We have a multitude of consumer goods and a multiplicity of lifestyle choices and entertainments. We have the first and great commandment Wear a condom. And we have absolution in the form of abortion on demand – 200,000 every year”.

The devout Muslim replies, “What you call lifestyle choices are perversions; and your entertainments are decadent and pornographic”.

When we look at the decay of public life as seen any night of the week in our towns and cities, and when we review the lewd and voyeuristic mass entertainments on television, can we really deny the devout Muslim’s case against western society?

Faithlessness and decadence are nothing new – not even when you dress them up in the polite costume of “secularisation”. Our besetting problem in Britain is that we have neglected and turned away from the Christian faith. This neglect is all the worse for its having been perpetrated in the name of “enlightenment” and “progressive values”. There is nothing enlightened or progressive about them.

While I am not uncritical of all aspects of modern society, I do not recognise this picture of Britain as a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. Most people are leading ordinary lives, making the best of what they have, and treating their fellow man decently. Sure banks have led people into debt, sure there is too much concentration on celebrity, certainly some television is voyeuristic and exploitative (but not all of it) and yes, there are problems with drugs and alcohol. That isn’t the whole picture though, and to suggest it is to agree with the very media that Mullen probably despises.

Here endeth the sermon.
