   Epicureanism is a superb system of philosophy. Almost every modern thinker worth their salt, from Bayle to Hume to Marx recognised how indebted they were to the philosopher of the garden.

   It is telling that all the monotheisms have found Epicureanism deeply subversive.

   This is a fine example of Hitchens’ periodical anti-Jewish belch. He has to keep re-establishing his credentials as a Saidian so he occasionally finds these little niches of opportunity to mock Jews for their “tribal backwardness”, which is of course an established truth universally acknowledged.

   Holy crap! That was too sophisticated for my feeble mind. At least he goes forward (time wise) and doesn’t take the Jooz to task for Greek, Egyptian and Babylonian gods, thanks deity.

   Frankly, peasants or not, they gave Greeks a bloody nose, and now we have Maccabee beer and Maccabee Tel-Aviv. Fer krissake…

   Martin Amis, in his book “Experience” explains very sweetly and acerbically why Hitchens can never be really Jewish, while he, Amis, is Jewish by blood (due to an affair with a “Jewess” in his salad days, or something).

   Here is Hitchens with Jon Stewart, at one point pretending he can schmooze in Jewish self-deprecation…
