Surging the inside

Did you read this yet? (long)

There’s a good response to it here:

The situation is looking significantly better in Iraq. Good to hear. I do not think the situation is developing towards civil war anymore.

Yes — that is a good thing.

“Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.”  V.D. Hanson noted that Iraq is a case where the opposite of this is true.

The better Iraq goes, the more the nattering nabobs of negativity will buzz and vibrate in their nest.

(For Brits [and Yanks] who find the reference obscure.)

Indeed. I remember George Orwell in 1942 commenting on the war in North Africa: “Someone told me: I bet Rommel will be in Cairo within a month. What he meant was: I hope Rommel will be in Cairo within a month. Now, I didn’t hope anything of the kind, and therefore I could see that the chances of holding onto Egypt were pretty good.” Orwell knew damn well who his friends were and who his enemies were, and behaved accordingly, not like some people we know.

My contact in Iraq is also cautiously optimistic, whereas 6 months ago he was despairing (after being seated in the radii of a suicide bombing which killed some of his friends - who were sat with him).

    1. I love Christopher Hitchens. The man has a well founded sense of morality.

    2. I’ve been noticing since July that things have been getting noticeably better in Iraq. Glad to see my faith has been repaid.
It will be messy but then think of the shit that Iraq has been through since its inception. Keep trying, keep the faith and the world becomes a better place.
